“You look like a princess. I’m sorry
I’m late. It took a while for me to escape.”
He forced a smile but the pain was visible in his eyes.
“I haven’t brought a rose but can I still have this
dance with you?”
I nodded. There was no way I’m going to let that pass. I
helped him up as he struggled to get out of the wheelchair. He
looked so fragile in front of me. There was no music but the beatings
of our hearts were enough for our last dance. He hugged me. I
was crying intensely. I wanted to tell him that I love him and
I miss him; but I just couldn’t. For a moment, we were just
dancing silently, contented with each other’s presence.
I couldn’t tolerate it anymore and so I said, “I miss
you.”
“I miss you more.” He replied.
Even though I couldn’t see him in the dark, I knew from
his voice that he was struggling.

“I’m going to tell you a story.”
He paused for a moment before he continued.
“Once upon a time, there lived a prince and
a princess. The prince fell in love with the princess
but he couldn’t let her know. He was too shy
and hence he did foolish things to annoy her. In that
way, he would be able to get her attention…”
He paused and tries to catch his breath. We were still
dancing and holding on to each other. He continued.
“One day, the prince saw her crying. He was
hurt. He never wanted to see his princess crying.
Therefore, he decided to take the risk. He went to
her with nothing to offer but his hands to wipe away
the tears. Since then, they became good friends. However,
the prince never told her about his feelings for her.
He was afraid. He knew that his time was running short
and Leukaemia would soon take away his life...”
We stopped dancing and let go of each other. He looked
at me straight in my eyes.
“M-most of all, he was afraid of l-losing her.
He l-loves her so m-much…”
He fell. I didn’t know what to do. I was scared.
I kneeled down next to him sobbing.
“B-but the prince didn’t know that the
princess loves him too…” I said.
I was in deep pain. I love him so much I didn’t
want to lose him. Using the last strength he had,
he wiped away the tears from my eyes like he did before
at the rooftop.
“I-I l-love you, m-my prin…cess…”

“Hi Nate, how are you doing?”
I was sitting beside his grave. It’s been a year since he'd
left, but the pain remains the same.
“I miss you…”
Tears began to fall from my eyes.
“How I wish you were here...”
I closed my eyes. Suddenly, I heard a voice I’ve been craving
for a year.
“Happy birthday my princess. I miss you more.”
“Nate?”
“Yes, it’s me. Please don’t cry. I’m always
here with you. If you can’t find me there, look for me in
your heart. You will never be alone, princess...”
“I love you…”
“I know, but don’t be afraid to love someone else.
Someday, you’ll find someone better than me. I love you,
Brei and you will always be my princess. Don't forget me.”
“Nate…!”
He’s gone.
It was like a fairy tale came true. Now, I’m
back to reality. It still hurts, but I know that he
will never leave me. I will never forget him; the
boy who was once my enemy; the boy who used his hands
to wipe away the tears from my eyes, my best friend
and my first love.
